Planning for an amazing engagement session {Colorado Wedding Photographer}

It’s that time of year again – weddings are still a few months away, but engagement sessions are on the calendar. The two most common questions I get this time of year are, “Where should we take our engagement session?” and “What should we wear?!”

The wonderful thing about engagement sessions is that anything goes. It’s a great opportunity to take photos somewhere with a different vibe than your wedding venue, or somewhere that has special meaning to you, or just somewhere you’ve always wanted to go. I am always, always ready to go photograph somewhere new, by the way – don’t be shy to suggest something unique!

(from left to right: Carrie and Matt had a gorgeous wedding in a church and a reception at the Omni Interlocken resort, but wanted a more natural, Colorado feel for their engagement photographs so they chose Red Rocks, Catie and Derek had a book-themed wedding and love coffee – the Tattered Cover was a natural choice, Jenn and Erick wanted something unique and were incorporating elements of vintage Denver into their wedding, so we decided to go to Lakeside Amusement Park.)

 So you have your location…now, what to wear, right? I have a confession: I had no idea how overwhelming picking an outfit could be until this year, when we did family photographs for the first time in ages. I spent weeks trying to coordinate our outfits to be just right. At the end of the day, I probably overthought it. The most important thing is really and truly to wear something you feel fabulous in. That might be jeans and hiking boots (we are in Colorado, after all), or it might be an adorable dress and sky high heels. Or bring both – the important thing is feeling confident. That said, there are a few guidelines that you can follow to help your photos be that much better

1. Coordinate, but don’t feel like you need to match: Think about dressing as though you’ll be attending the same event – if you’re wearing a little black dress, your fiance should probably not wear his favorite sports jersey. Same thing with colors – think about colors you would use together to decorate a room – for example, earth tones look great together. Earth tones and flourescent pink, not so much.

2. Avoid loud prints and prominent logos: These are distracting – you want the focus to be on you – not  the brand you’re wearing.

3. Accessorize: Don’t be afraid to add a scarf, a cute jacket, a fun headband or a statement piece of jewelery - the great thing about bringing along these pieces is you can add them to some picture, and take them out for a few as well.

4. Bring along more than one outfit: You may or may not decide you want to change clothes, but it’s great to have the option. Lots of times couples will bring a casual look and a dressy look.

5. Consider visiting a makeup artist: If you plan on having your makeup professionally done for your wedding, the engagement session is a perfect time to do a trial run. If not, a stop by the MAC counter can do wonders for those of us who are less than comfortable doing our own makeup.

6. Relax: Really. You’re going to look fabulous – I promise. But if you’re really nervous, a pre- photo session glass of wine can help a bit :)
