I love photographing brand new families and brand new people. There are so many things unique to this tiny sliver of personhood that is being a newborn. In those first two weeks, babies spend so much time sleeping and growing – and I love getting those sweet sleepy faces and curled up little bodies in photographs. But when they are awake, there is something totally unique in the way they observe and take in the world. When I first started photographing newborns, I tried really hard to mostly get posed and sleepy images. But now, my favorite photographs are often the ones where they’re awake and interacting with the world around them. Ella is one of those newborns that looks as though she is already trying to figure out this great adventure she’s been born into – pretty fitting for a girl with a world map on her nursery walls. I love the combination of awake and asleep photographs we captured here. I love the snuggly, sleepy photos in her parents’ arms, but some of my favorite images from her session are the ones with her bright eyes looking right at the camera, or studying her adoring parents. Welcome to the world, Ella!
